Two persons died on Tuesday as unmarked J5 bus they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck at Saapade axis along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Traffic report from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, indicated that the crash occurred around 6.30am and both vehicles were Lagos bound at the time of the incident.
The Public Relations Officer, TRACE, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi told NOTM online that the HOWO truck with number plate EKY 65 XF loaded with Flour Mills products developed mechanical fault while on transit and had to be parked off the to be attended to.
He said an eye witness told the TRACE operatives who arrived the scene few minutes later that the driver of the ill-fated J5 bus was speeding before he rammed the bus into the truck from behind.
Akinbiyi said both the driver of the J5 bus and his motor boy died on the spot.
He said, “According to an eyewitness account, a Howo truck with reg no EKY 65 XF, loaded with Flour Mills products, developed a mechanical problem while on transit and had to be parked off the to be attended to.
“However, in the course of attending to the vehicle, the J5 Bus which was also loaded with tomatoes, pepper and the likes, and was also transiting inbound Lagos. But at Saapade axis, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the driver rammed the bus into the Howo truck from behind, due to excessive speed and dozing while on the wheels. Both the driver and the motor-boy instantly died due to the impact of the collision.”
Akinbiyi said the remains of the deceased have been deposited at a private mortuary at Ipara in Remo.
While TRACE commiserated with the families of the deceased, it warned drivers to avoid excessive speed, take adequate rest before embarking on a journey and avoid driving when visibility is poor.
