One person burnt as two tankers explode in Ogun

An unidentified male adult was consumed by fire as two tankers caught fire and exploded on Wednesday along Ijebu Ode- Ibadan Expressway.

Traffic report from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps indicated that the accident occurred at midnight in front NASFAT along that route.

The Public Relations Officer,TRACE, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi said according to eyewitness, the driver of the first tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol, was speeding thus lost the control of the vehicle, it fell into a ditch and it caught fire.

He added that another tanker driver also driving a tanker saw the first tanker on fire and decided to help out, but in the process his tanker too got engulfed with fire.

The TRACE spokesman said one person died in the inferno, but he could not make categorical statement on his identity whether or not he was one of the persons in either of the tankers.

Akinbiyi said, “The incident happened at midnight, one person(male) died in the tanker fire.

“Our men relying on eyewitness account could not categorical say anything about the identity of the person who died in the inferno. However, the victim was trapped by the fallen tanker.”

He explained that fire fighters fought the inferno this morning and had to go for a refill to effectively contain it.

Akinbiyi cautioned motorists to be more careful around  this axis or take alternative  routes if they can.

Meanwhile, operatives of TRACE, Federal Road Safety Corps and policemen are on ground closely monitoring the situation.
