Inspector, one other killed as #ENDSARS protest turns violent

The Lagos Police Command says a police inspector and a passerby were killed on Monday as the #ENDSARS protest was hijacked by armed protesters.

Two other police inspectors were also injured in the incident.

The armed protesters were said to have laid siege on the Anti- Kidnapping Unit Office of the command in Surulere, broke into the cell and liberated two of the kidnap cases’ suspects.

A statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, catalogued these incidents.

He said the armed protesters were repelled by operatives on duty.

However, Adejobi said during the exchange of fire three police inspectors were hit by bullets, Ekei Joshua with AP No 175493, Peter Agabi with AP No 251138 and Erinfolami Ayodeji with AP No 229241.

He said Erinfolami Ayodeji later died at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where they were rushed to for treatment.

He said in addition, the protesters fired and killed one Ikechukwu Ilohamauzo, a 55-year old, who was caught up in the blockage caused by the protesters while driving Toyota Sienna Bus, with number plate LSD 296 FX.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has called for calm and professionalism from the protesters and police personnel respectively “as the #ENDSARS protests have been hijacked by some unscrupulous elements, who are fully armed, in Lagos State.”

However, Adejobi said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered the Homicide section of the SCID, Yaba, Lagos to carry out thorough investigation into the incident for further police actions.
