Confusion in Ogun as stray bullet allegedly hits, kills student

Pandemonium occurred around Sapon -Enu Gada axis in Abeokuta metropolis on Thursday afternoon as some security agents trailing alleged Internet fraudster ‘Yahoo boys’ in a bid to arrest them fired a shot that allegedly hit a pupil which led to her death.

Some residents alleged  they are operatives of the special security outfit, OP-Mesa.

In ensuing pursuit, crime report from the melee indicated that a stray bullet from one of the policemen missed target and hit a female SS 1 pupil known as Sadiat of Unity High School, Ago Ika, Abeokuta.

The female pupil was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta where she was pronounced dead.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident but  denied that the policemen were after ‘Yahoo boys’, but he said his men were after a notorious cultist who was sighted in that vicinity.

He said some hoodlums in the area pounced on the policemen in the process and macheted one of them.

He said, “It is not true. The policemen were from the Anti-cultists Unit, and they were not pursuing any Yahoo boy, they were about to arrest a notorious cultist, when some hoodlums attacked them, the hoodlums even macheted one of the policemen.”

He said the injured policeman is still receiving treatment in the hospital.

Oyeyemi however said he was not aware whether any passerby was hit by a stray bullet.

Irate students of the Unity High School reportedly stormed the police post at Enu Gada and were said to have pelted policemen with stones, and other objects over the incident. They were however repelled by a reinforcement of additional security agents.
