The Nigerian film industry has been plunged into grief following reports of the death of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.

News of the actor’s alleged passing spread across social media on May 12, 2026, with reports claiming he died in a hospital in Lagos after battling an undisclosed illness for some time. Veteran actress Kate Henshaw first hinted at the tragedy in a post on X, saying she had just heard disturbing news and hoped it was untrue.

Soon after, tributes and reactions flooded social media, with many users claiming the popular Nollywood star had passed away.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, the actor hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He attended Federal Government College, Daura, before proceeding to the University of Calabar, where he studied Law.

Although he appeared in a minor role in Sinners in the House in 2003, his rise to fame began after he emerged first runner-up in the 2011 Mr. Nigeria competition. His breakthrough came with his role in Weekend Getaway, which earned him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2013 Best of Nollywood Awards.

Ekubo later became widely recognized for his appearance in the sitcom AY’s Crib and went on to feature in commercially successful films such as The Bling Lagosians and Your Excellency. In 2023, he received praise for his role in Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story, directed by Kayode Kasum.

Outside acting, Alexx Ekubo was known for his friendship with IK Ogbonna and Yomi Casual. His personal life also attracted public attention, especially following his highly publicized breakup with model Fancy Acholonu in 2021.

Fans had recently expressed concern after the actor stepped away from public appearances shortly after starring in Conversation in Transit alongside Richard Mofe-Damijo and Osas Ighodaro.

If confirmed, his death would mark another painful loss for Nollywood, as the industry mourns one of its most recognizable stars. At the time of this report, no official statement had been released by his family regarding the reports of his passing.
