Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command say they have arrested a suspected armed robber and a serial car snatcher in Ijebu Ode and Abeokuta respectively, as the offensive against criminals hots up in the state.
In the sting operation, in Sagamu- Ijebu Ode axis, the command stated that it paid off as one suspect Akeem Owonikoko was apprehended along Sagamu- Ijebu Ode- Benin highway around 00.30hrs in a 24hrs operation led by ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, the Area Commander Ijebu Ode.
A statement by the state Police Public Relations, Omolola Odutola indicated this.
She said as soon the suspect who was driving a Toyota Camry inward Ijebu Ode from Ososa sighted the police team, he diverted into a close.
She said further, “The Police chased after him, but all the occupants of the car scampered into a bus, making the Area Commander to divide the team into a cardinal search during which, a disguised man on VGN uniform who was the mastermind, of several nefarious crime, attempted to outsmart the Policemen, but he was arrested.”
She said when the police team searched the car 32 expended cartridges,78 live cartridges,
and a locally fabricated short gun were discovered.
Odutola added that a search warrant was also executed at his residence, which led to others discovery of more arms and two other cars.
She stated that the suspect has made confessional statement to police in which fingered an Inspector of Police, from whom he procured the guns.
Talking about the serial car thief, Odutola said the suspect, 53-year-old Sunday Dosunmu was caught at Leme area of Abeokuta metropolis while trying to remove cars using locally-fabricated master keys.
He was caught in the act on Saturday 12th August 2023 at about 19.30hrs. Odutola said the suspect had earlier been arrested over same offence on 17th September 2022 at Olorunsogo while trying to steal a car from a park along with his syndicate.
On the current arrest, she said, “People who saw him raised the alarm which made him take to flight, but how far can a 53-year- old man run? The young guys gave him a hot chase and caught up with him, they later alerted the police team that visited the scene and arrested the suspect.
“Two fabricated iron master key were found in his possession and obviously it is part of the instrument used to unlock unsuspecting car owners vehicles.”
