Sporadic protests erupted this Friday morning in Ketu/Mile 12 and Ojota areas of Lagos over inability of people to use old naira notes for daily business transactions but police said they are on top of the situation.
For days now such protests had occurred in parts of Edo, Delta, Oyo and Ogun states, some with casualties.
The Lagos protests captured on social media platforms caused gridlock along the ever busy Ikorodu-Ojota -Ketu expressway.
The highways were blocked with bonfires while many vehicles were reportedly vandalised in the process.
NOTM gathered that trouble began following the rejection of the old naira notes of #1000 (one thousand naira) and #500 (five hundred naira) by traders in the area.
Traders, who had come to the market early Friday were disappointed by the rejection of the old naira notes by traders at the market, mostly people from the Northern part of the country.
Confirming the protest, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said reinforcement has been deployed to Mile 12 area of the state.
He stated this via his Twitter handle on Friday.
Responding to a tweet asking the PPRO to confirm the rumour, Hundeyin replied, “ It is true. Our men are there. Reinforcement units have been deployed. Stay safe out there as we closely monitor and manage the situation.”
News reaching NOTM indicated that Oke Koto area in Agege has also erupted with protests, but the police have swiftly moved in to stop its escalation.
