Sustaining developmental ideas identified as tool for development

Ability to sustain an idea or initiative has been identified as panacea for economic prosperity of any nation.

This came to the fore at various discussions during the 6 days, 52nd Annual Accountants’ Conference themed, ‘Nigeria: Adopting Sustainability For Economic Prosperity’ held at Abuja

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Muhammad Mamma Nami while presenting his paper titled, ‘Sustainability and Innovative Taxation’ said the place of sustainability in taxation was germane for government at all levels to achieve social and economic development as it would impact positively on revenue generation.

The FIRS boss added that  economic development would be guaranteed through taxation when a seamless tax administration process is achieved through digitalization among other things.

Papers presented include,  Education as a Tool to pilot Sustainability of Nigeria Economy, Climate change and the economy challenge, Financial reporting and audit assurance impact on Nigeria Economy sustainability, Effective Tax administration: Effect on Nigeria Economy sustainability, Lagos example

Others are, Sustainability and Innovative Taxation’, Effective Governance and Nigeria Economy sustainability, Deepening market opening for offering a sustainable Nigeria Economy,  Sustainable reporting as a veritable tool for economy Sustainability, clean Sustainable energy and the Nigeria Economy Transformation and Effect of climate change and the Sustainable energy At the end of the conference, the participants highlighted the need for Tax Agencies to collaborate massively, focus on efficient tax system to generate revenue through human capital development, staff training and motivation, good data management system and competent staff.

Revenue Agencies were urged to work more on innovations that would enhance confidence in tax system, transparent tax payment system, accelerate revenue generation through technology, expand digitization on areas of Tax clearance and assurance to Sustainability reporting.

Representing members of  Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, who participated in the conference virtually, Mrs Abosede Opawande said the program was worthwhile and  it would help them improve in the delivery of their duties more than ever before.
