The Nigeria Football Federation has named a 61- year- old Portuguese Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

The development followed the removal of Gernot Rohr as Coach of the team.

This appointment was approved after  the football body executive committee’s meeting held via video conference on Wednesday.

A statement released by the Nigeria Football Federation indicated that Peseiro will be an observer at the African Cup of Nations Tournament, scheduled for  kickoff on January 9, 2022 in Cameroon, with Augustine Eguavoen acting as the interim manager.

The release added that, that the committee resolved that Eguavoen who is the interim coach will lead the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon with the newly appointed coach(Peseiro) serving as observer.

“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr. Peseiro only playing the role of observer,” it stated.

It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr. Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr. Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr. Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON”, the statement added

Peseiro has had a 29-year coaching career, which started at Uniao Santarem in Portugal, and  also coached before in Africa at Al Ahly in 2015, while in similar vein has coached the national sides of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
