Ogun State Government on Tuesday debunked the news that two secondary students of the Baptist Boys High School, Oke Saje, Abeokuta died in a clash with their mates from Ilugun High School over unapproved gambling last Friday.
The state government said there was a fracas on the fateful day after the school hours and a student sustained bruises on his head, but he did not die and peace has been restored to the schools.
Some newspapers had,however, reported that two students of the BBHS died due to the injuries they sustained during the fracas.
The state government insisted that no lives were lost in the affected school.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, debunked the unconfirmed news during a monitoring exercise to BBHS and Ilugun High School, in the Abeokuta North Local Government Area.
She explained that a student of BBHS, Kowi Adeyemi in S.S.2 was attacked on Friday, June 25, 2021, and sustained some injuries, but insisted he is alive and responding to treatment.
She warned that government would not tolerate reportage of false and unconfirmed news.
She equally warned pupils with unruly behaviour to desist from the act, adding that any student caught with such unruly character would be expelled and no private schools in the state would admit such student.
Soyombo said, “We are reiterating that no student died in our schools, there was a fracas on Friday after school hours and a student sustained bruises on his head, but he did not die and peace has been restored to the schools.
“There is zero tolerance for bad behaviour in our schools, any students caught with such will be expelled and not be given admission into any private school in the State.
“I want to admonish parents to be vigilant with their wards, the clothes, drinks and foods they take, the friends they keep and their movement at all times. Our parents should support government’s efforts in restoring morals in schools.”
On his own part, the Principal, BBHS Senior School, Mr Oluseyi Kusimo, faulted the unconfirmed report of the death of the student by some media houses, stating that the pupils were in school and in their various classes.
