Three riot policemen attached to Ogun State Police Command have been arrested over alleged extortion and ordered to returned the sum of N153,000 forcefully taken from their victim.
The three policemen are Inspector Sunday John, and Sergeants Jimoh Asimiya, and Solomon Adedapo, who were attached to Owode-Egba division of the command.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects who were currently undergoing departmental orderly room trial, committed the offence while their victim was travelling from Abeokuta to Lagos.
Their victim, Sheriff Adedigba, a student of Lagos State University, Ojo, he said, had narrated his ordeal in the social media, which got the attention of the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun who immediately ordered the arrest of the erring cops.
Oyeyemi said, “Having heard about the incident on social media, the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer, Owode Egba whose jurisdiction the incident happened to fish out the erring officers with immediate effect.
“The three officers were quickly identified and apprehended. The money was recovered from them and returned to the victim, while the officers are currently undergoing departmental orderly room trial where appropriate punishment will be awarded to them.”
The CP appealed to members of the public “not to hesitate to report any officer of the command found doing anything that is not consistent with the law of the land.”
He also warned officers and men of the command to desist from any act capable of tarnishing the image of the force, as such will not be condoned.
