The Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta are now rushing to show evidence of parents or guardians’ tax payment), as a result of late response to tax clearance requirements by the state government.

This came as the students claimed that the Ordinary National Diploma 11 and Higher National Diploma 11 were initially to commence their second semester examinations on the 22nd of March, 2021 but for reasons best known to the institution were shifted to March 3 and thereafter to Monday March 8.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abeokuta by the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service the tax payment requirement is in compliance with the Personal Income Tax Law of the Federation.

The OGIRS has debunked the allegation by some students in a publication that they were being asked to pay tax.

In reference to Sunday Telegraph edition of September 27th 2020, The Executive Chairman Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Olugbenga Anthony Olaleye reacted to the information that went viral among students that OGIRS was asking them to pay tax.

Clarifying such, he said “no student of tertiary institutions in the state is expected to pay taxes as they are not yet taxable adults.”

He also noted that “the law expected only taxable entities earning income to pay taxes as and when due.”

Explaining further he added that “those whose parents or guardians do not have evidence of tax payments, the sum of N10, 000 only is charged in the name of the parents or guardian as payment in lieu of TCC for the assessment year.”

The statement added that the students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic who wanted to make payment in lieu of the TCC stormed the premises of Ogun State Internal Revenue Service Headquarters , Oke Mosan, Abeokuta for payment and request for tax receipt.

To ease the crowd, The Executive Chairman OGIRS and Special Adviser to the Governor on Revenue 11 , Mr Adegbenga Adeshina deployed more tax officers to the institution to compliment the existing staff strength in order to ensure the students are quickly attended to both at the headquarters and the institution.
