There is currently confusion in the Ogun State House of Assembly as hoodlums had allegedly burgled an office where the mace was kept and bolted with it.
The mace is the staff of authority of the legislative arm.
The incident happened on Thursday as those who identities were yet to unravelled allegedly broke into the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo’s office overnight and stole the official symbol of the legislature.
A source who pleaded anonymity said that this was the second time the hoodlums would burgle the assembly complex in the last three weeks.
Journalists were, however, denied access to the Assembly complex located at Oke Mosan Abeokuta by security agents at the gate, citing order from above.
One of the security agents said it was not their normal practice to stop journalists from accessing the complex but it was due to an order from the clerk of the house.
However, it was gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun had earlier on Thursday visited the assembly for on the spot assessment.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident.
He said the head of the mace has been recovered, while investigation into the burglary and theft had commenced.
“Yes, There is an unfortunate incident today in the assembly complex. The hoodlums broke into the assembly through the ceiling, and removed the official mace of the house. That is why the Commissioner of Police has to go there for on the spot assessment,” he said.
Efforts to reach the Speaker proved abortive as he did not pick call made to his line by our correspondent.
