line with the resolution at the National Economic Council meeting held last Thursday, Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has set up a Judicial Panel of Investigation to unravel cases of police brutalities and extra-judicial killings in the state.
The governor has also set aside seed fund of N50 million as start-up amount to enable payment of monetary compensation to deserving victims.
These details were contained in a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kunle Somorin.
To head the judicial panel, he announced the appointment of retired Justice Solomon Olugbemi as Chairman.
Abiodun also constituted Special Security and Human Rights Committee and Human Rights Complaints Office and with terms of reference on the committees’ mandates.
The statement read partly, “The Committee is charged, amongst others, with the task of ensuring the protection of the rights of citizens by all security and law enforcement agencies; monitor the prosecution of any officer indicted by the Presidential Panel on Police Reforms and entertain complaints of human rights violations from the State’s Human Rights Complaints Office.”
Members of the committee are Joseph Ogunniyi, Bamidele Adebayo, and Shodeinde Oluwaponmile.
“The Committee will facilitate easy access of complainants to prompt attention and assistance and give regular reports to the Special Security and Human Rights Committee for action,” the statement added.
