The operatives of the Ogun State Police command say they have gunned down a suspected highway robber dressed in army camouflage gear.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the incident happened early this morning (Friday) along Sagamu/Benin Expressway.
He said the police division in Ijebu Ife at about 2.45am got a distress call that a gang of armed robbers in military camouflage fully armed had blocked the expressway and were dispossessing motorists of their valuables.
He added that the Divisional Police Officer in Ijebu Ife, Raphael Ugbenyo quickly mobilised his Anti- robbery team as well as a team of Special Anti-robberyr Squad to the scene.
Oyeyemi said when the robbers sighted the policemen, they (robbers) engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes.
He said at the end of the encounter, one of hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped into the nearby bush with various degrees of gunshot injuries.
Oyeyemi said items recovered from the scene are: two mock guns, a cell phone, assorted charms and a tourchlight.
The corpse of the robber has been deposited in the mortuary, while effort is on to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun who praised his men for their gallantry display had directed thorough combing of the entire area so as to bring the escaped members of the gang to justice.
The CP also appealed to the general public, especially hospitals to alert the police if anyone with bullet injury is seen in their area.
The CP therefore reteirated his earlier warning to criminals to steer clear of Ogun State as the command is ready more than ever to take the battle to their doorsteps.
